July Photo of the Month closes soon...

Just a reminder there is only a few days left in this months photo comp and so far entries have been low (partially due to lack of surf I hope) so it is still anyones game. Remember to read terms and conditions on the "comps" page and get your entries in a.s.ap for your chance to win a FREE T-Shirt proudly sponsored this month by Hurley and Cheapskates.

From the Vault...

A quick run-down of the last week or two and then some retro old shots for your viewing pleasure! - Last thursday a predicted groundswell failed to impress the 3 week starved crew with the short period 2-4ft groundswell although clean, not really quenching the thirst of all and made worse by the fact that the next day was virtually flat as a pancake

Greymouth legend Phil Harris made the 3 1/2 hour journey north to sample some Nelson delights after an anonymous tip-off from an anonymous ex-greymouth surfer.

Although the conditions were marginal Phil still managed to stun a few mullets with some crisp off-the tops. In writing that just then it reminded me of how quick us Nelson guys are to whinge and moan about other surfers from either coast visiting our breaks but how hypocritical this can be with most of us frequenting either Westport or Blenheim/Kaikoura at least once a month.

Ive set up a poll on the right hand side of the page regarding the crowd situation at Snappers so answer honestly. I for one think the crowd factor is pretty much the same as it was 5 years ago
I remember counting 34 cars in the carpark during Cyclone Wati but hay then again maybe it is more crowded nowadays, or maybe, just maybe, we all get a little more claustraphobic as the years roll by......

Anyhow, hows about some opinionated spills from you guys?? I get sick of this e-diarreoa sometimes...

School Holiday Flatness...

That title pretty much sums it all up really! It has been 11 days since the last surfable day in Nelson and I must say things are getting rather restless. I mean of course you can go and travel to either coast but Im not gonna lie and will admit that water temperatures at least out east anyway are less than enjoyable at this time of year. A few groms including Jackson Gregory, Marco Edwards and Joe Leeper have ventured down west over the holidays with good results and the last week or so of easterly wind pattern have made west the best place to be of late.
(above) Jim Tyson, always serious under pressure.
I guess the smart people such as Nige keeley, Olin P and Q-Gately have all bailed to Indo for a stint whilst Bruce Wilson returned home to Vicco although I cant ever recall that being so warm at this time of the year either!.

(above) Jackson Gregory, rock hopping.
The alternative I guess is to just to tie weird bandanna's round your head and drive or "cruise" around the back streets of Nelson all day long and this is a practice both me and Frosty for one have been taking to a higher level. Skateboarding is another popular form of cross-training although its always only a matter of time until the fun and games becomes someone hurt.

(above) Nick Bygate's sacrificial skateboard.... silly boy.
Anyhow , check out the "club info" page for more mysterious agenda and keep the head up high as it looks good for later in the week and the days are getting longer again so its all downhill from here!!!!
Word.
