Flat Spell Record Imminent

Its sad to say folks but we may be staring down the barrel of the gun not the waves as we look to surpass
the 5 weeks of flatness last seen in 2005.
Grit your teeth, grin and bear it and hold onto your chair as we surge forward into the unknown.
Here is a quick excerpt from NIWA which gives hope heading towards the end of March.
" Flat until the end of March brah"

Nelson Crew Go Well at Go for Gold

Ben Winmill on his way to finals time.
Nelson adoptee, Ben Winmill created more history this past weekend at the Annual "Go For Gold" surfing competition becoming the second Nelson surfer in history to make a SISA event final, finishing 4th place of the longboard division. Jackson Gregory also made the semi finals of the longboard and quarter final of the juniors whilst myself managing a semi final birth in the masters( for old dudes) and quarter finals of the opens.
The best part about the whole weekend is that it was instigated by the grommets, Jimmy McKay and Jackson pulling their finger out and saying "hey we wanna do this". Previous generous sponsorship was once again on offer for those competing taking the sting out of the price tag and big thanks go to John Hogan at Hogeys surf shop along with Russell Bruce of "Bruce Design&Build" for helping out the guys with petrol and entry fee costs.
Ben recieving his fourth place prize in longboards.
These events are great fun and the surfing is inspirational and anyone wanting to get involved should do so.
Nelson Boardriders Club itself, does not provide funds towards these events but with networking, and the correct fundraising it is possible for all the crew to have a cheap weekend away.

Former Nelson Lad Shapes up a Storm

Moving to Australia a few years back, former Nelson skater/surfer Chris "gnome" Orr, has embarked on one of the trickiest
games in the modern surfing world. Starting out small a couple of years ago Chris is now
spitting out some healthy looking boards and has stretched his arms out back to his old local
inviting any keen Nelson crew to check out his stuff and get in touch.
Chris will be travelling back to Nelson in late march/early April and said he would love to get some
local boys riding his shapes. Checkout his blog below.....

Settle into the Flatness

(above): Happier times at Snappers/
Thats right people. With no for/sea/abel swell forecast within the next 12 days it seems that us Nelson surfers need to hunker down and grin and bear it as the sparse run of swell continues. For those who believe in black magic and murphy's law then it is totally expected that as soon as our grommets and summer holiday crew return to university and work then no doubt the flat drought will break and Surf City will once again reign swell supreme. If you are lacking enthusiasm and need some spark then below is a compiled list of why flat runs in Nelson are actually good for your mental health. See you at the end of the rainbow!!!!

Top 5 Reasons why Flat Spells are Good

5: You can concentrate on other less important things such as work.
4: No need to hide that Christmas belly in the snappers carpark.
3: Spend more time with your family.
2: Become more appreciative of when there actually is swell.
1: Turn to alternative activities such as fishing, fishing and fish.

Anatori Glory

Not to be outdone by the shenanigans of most of the Nelson lot,
Conal Parkes took a step out of the box and headed to the Northwest coast finding some gems
at Sandhill and Anatori, rumoured also to be in the area was Keni Duke

Desperado Swell and West Coast Melts

After two solid weeks without waves everyone seemed to have had enough and a couple of different sets of crews headed to the West Coast for Saturday's predicted (by swellmap) 10 out of 10 swell.
The boys werent dissapointed with Jackson Gregory, Roz Dubz, Liam Buttner and company scoring all time Cobden/Channel joined by Christchurch talent scouts Taylor Mcneill and Tristan "T-Yazz" Yarrell.
Bruce Wilson made a quick Cameo appearance before sneaking back up the coast for some more secluded gems.Meanwhile, back at the Nelson ranch, people were convulsing in disgust at just the mere thought of those lucky crew scoring all time West magic....

Locally.......... Monday night (nelson anniversary) saw a quickly rising groundswell disguised as  a windswell glass off and some lucky lads surfed until dark whilst the leftover swell the next day reminded everyone of winter with snow on the western ranges and 11 degree air temp highly contrasting the night before's boardshorts surf.

Silly season is over and its time to surf so start your chanting and lets get surf city back in the mode!!!
